Why are you charging money for something that's always been free?

When Utah's child sexual abuse prevention law was passed in 2014, the mandate for educator training was left unfunded by the legislature. Since 2017, Prevent Child Abuse Utah has been covering the cost of providing the training through private fundraising. The expenses of maintaining the course have grown too great to be covered by charitable donations alone.

How often do I have to take Boundary Town?

Utah's child sexual abuse prevention law (UT 53G-9-207) currently mandates educators complete training every three years. Your organization may have other rules that require you to take it more frequently.

Are there built-in reporting tools?

Yes, organizations with pre-paid licences will be emailed a monthly report listing the employees who have completed the course and the number of licenses used.

Can I take a different training?

To be in compliance with the law, public school educators and employees must take training that has been vetted and approved by the Utah State Board of Education. Boundary Town is USBE-approved. You can find a list of approved trainings at the prevention webpage for USBE.

How long can I access the course material and my certificate of completion?

An individual user will have one year of access to the course and a certificate of completion dated when the training is first completed. Employees of organizations that pre-paid for user licenses have one year of access. The terms are negotiable.

What Is Boundary Town and Who Is Required to Take It?

Boundary Town is an online course approved by the Utah State Board of Education to fulfil the mandate outlined in Utah’s Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Law. Many employers in health organizations, police departments, after-school recreation, and youth sports also require those working with children to be trained.

Boundary Town is Required in Utah if:

The training is beneficial to any adult working with youth in Utah. This includes stay at home parents, and grandparents too.

You are a teacher in Utah’s public and charter schools.
You coach a team at one of Utah’s schools.
You are a principal, vice principal, or someone who does administrative work.
You are a school counselor, social worker, psychologist or other school professional.
You are a substitute teacher.
You are a staff member for K-12 schools.
Your employer requires it.

Boundary Town May Be Required in Utah if:

You teach dance, art or music, in an after school setting.
You coach a team for club sports or your city’s recreation department.
You are a clergy member or church volunteer that works directly with children.
You tutor children outside of school.
You volunteer as a leader of a scouting troop.
You work at a preschool.

How Boundary Town Works

If you’re and educator, administrator, coach, or staff at a public or charter school in Utah, you are required to complete child sexual abuse prevention training every 3 years, though your employer may require it every year. How We Handle Compliance Reporting

We take the reporting burden off your shoulders. Here’s how we do it:

Certificate of Completion – Upon completing the course and certifying participation, a certificate of competition will be issued. The certificate can be saved on a hard drive or printed out immediately.
Organizational Grouping – Organizations with pre-paid licenses will be assigned a unique group code.
Monthly Reporting –By the 5th of the month, organizations with pre-paid licenses will receive a reporting listing the employees who have completed the course and the amount of licenses remaining.
Annual Reporting – At the end of a contract, organizations will receive an annual report

Frequently Asked Questions

The training costs $11.99 for one individual to complete the course and receive a certificate of completion. For school districts or other large organizations, the cost is capped at $15,000. Payment plans are available on an annual or quarterly basis. The fee represents an investment in risk mitigation, long‑term savings of time and resources, and the fostering of a community in which children remain safe from abuse.
